Employment with the Alberta government provides the opportunity for students, new graduates and experienced workers to grow and realize their full potential. The Alberta government offers employees a dynamic and diverse work environment where there are on-the-job opportunities to learn and grow.

While most jobs are located in Edmonton, Alberta's capital city, there are many Alberta government employees who work in cities, towns and municipalities across the province. Generally, jobs are permanent, full-time positions; however, part-time, seasonal and temporary employees are also part of the provincial government workforce.

Government policy and legislation is determined by elected representatives while government ministries are accountable for its implementation.

Approximately 75 percent of Alberta government employees are members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE). The AUPE is the bargaining agent for our unionized employees. The Alberta government works with AUPE on many initiatives affecting employees, including workplace health and safety.

In the annual survey of members of the Alberta public service, employees report satisfaction in their work as a Government of Alberta employee (Employee Engagement Survey). We offer many choices and opportunities for employees to experience variety in their work. The Alberta Public Service Workforce Plan is the foundation for ensuring that the provincial government has the talent it needs to build a stronger province for current and future generations. It also ensures that Government of Alberta employees have the supports required to be effective in their work and to continue building their careers with us through opportunities to:
